2014 : SACHIN RAMESH TENDULKAR (1973)




            Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on April.24.1973 at Mumbai, Maharashtra.

            He was educated at Shardashram Vidya Mandir, Mumbai.He was coached in cricket by Ramakant Achrekar. 

            A World renowned Cricketer, He played as Right handed batsmen, Right arm leg spin off spin medium pace bowler, Vice Captain and Captain for the Indian Team in all formats of Cricket i.e. Tests, One Day Internationals (ODI) and Twenty 20 (T20) during an illustrious  career spanning 24 years (1989 – 2013).

            He is based in Mumbai after retirement and is associated with corporate enterprises and charitable organizations since 2013.



Sportsmen – Cricket

            He played for the Mumbai, Asian XI, Indian and Mumbai Indians IPL teams, besides for Yorkshire Cricket Club (1992) and Marylebone Cricket Club (2014) in a career spanning 24 years.

            He played his first match at the age of 16 on November.15.1989 in the India vs Pakistan Series at Karachi and his last match at the age of 40 on November.16.2013 in the India vs West Indies at Mumbai.

           A top order right handed most complete batsman he has played more than 700 matches and scored more than 30000 runs.

           A right arm medium pace bowler he has bowled more than 0000 balls and scored 000 wickets

           He served as Vice Captain (2007 – 0000) and Captain (1996 – 1997) (1999 – 2000) of the Indian Team.

           He played 6 World Cups and was part of the Indian Team which won the 2011 World Cup at Mumbai.



Awards

            The Government of India honoured him with the civilian awards Padma Sri in 1999, Padma Vibhushan in 2008 and Bharat Ratna in 2014. He became the youngest and the first sportsperson to receive the Bharat Ratna

            The Government of India conferred him the Arjuna award in 1994 and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1997 – 98.

            The Government of Maharashtra conferred the Maharashtra Bhushan in 2001.

            The notable cricket awards are Wisden Award in 1997, 2010, 2012 and Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in 2010.

            He received the 62 Man of the Match Awards, 16 Man of the Series Awards and Man of Tournament (2003 World Cup).

            He received the Cricketer of the Year Awards from Board of Cricket Control India (BCCI 2011) and International Cricket Council (ICC 2010).



Media

            The TIME Magazine featured him thrice in Asian Heroes (2006), Top 10 Sporting Moments (2009), and World’s 100 Most Influential People (2010).

            NDTV and Zee TV recognized him as their Sports Icon of the Year.



Orders

           He was conferred the Membership of the Order of Australia in recognition of his contribution to Cricket.



Goodwill Ambassador

            The United Nations appointed him as its Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in 2010 and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for South Asia in 2013.

            He also served as Goodwill Ambassador for Indian Contingent to Olympic Games held at Rio de Janerio in 2016.

            He is the Campaigner for National Egg Coordination Committee and National AIDS Awareness Committee.

Ranks

            The Indian Air Force conferred on him the rank of Honorary Group Captain in 2010.  He is the first sports person and non aviator to receive the rank.

            He is known as God of Cricket and Little Blaster or Master Blaster



Memoirs

            Playing It My Way – My Autobiography co-authored by Bora Majumdar was released on 2014.

            Limca Book of Records 2015 recognized the book as the best selling adult hardback fiction and nonfiction categories in history of Indian publishing with the first day of sale of 150289 copies. 

            14th Raymond Crossword Book Awards 2016 awarded their Popular Choice Award in Biography category to this book.
