Rajiv Gandhi was born on Aug.20.1944
at Bombay into the illustrious Nehru family.
He was
educated at Doon School, Dehradun and Universities of Cambridge and London. He received
his Commercial Flying Licence from Delhi Flying Club.
He served as
Commercial Pilot with Indian Airlines (1969 - 1981) .He resigned and joined
politics after the tragic demise of his brother Sanjay Gandhi in an air crash
in 1981.
He served
as General Secretary (1981 – 1984) of Indian National Congress. In 1984 after
the tragic assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi was appointed as the
youngest Prime Minister of India.
He served
as Prime Minister of India (1984 – 1989) and subsequently as Leader of
Opposition (1989 – 1991)
He was assassinated
on May.21.1991 while addressing a public rally at Sriperumbadur, Tamil Nadu.

He became
the youngest Prime Minster of India at the age of 40 after the assassination of
his mother Indira Gandhi and steered the Indian National Congress with an
impressive victory of 400 seats in the Lok Sabha.
National
He negotiated the Punjab Accord (1985),
Assam Accord (1985) and Mizoram Accord (1987) to end militancy and insurgency
in the respective states.
The National Education Policy was
implemented which established Navodaya Vidyalayas
The National Telecom Policy was
implemented which expanded the telephone networks and television stations all
over the nation.
The Anti Defection Law was enacted
to strengthen the foundations of democracy
Regional
He cofounded the South Asian
Association for Regional Cooperation in 1985.
The Indian Defence Forces under
his leadership thwarted coup attempts in Seychelles and Maldives and organized
peace keeping operations in Sri Lanka.
International
He campaigned for Global Peace, Development
and Nuclear disarmament at International forums like United Nations, Non
Aligned Movement and Commonwealth Movement.
Awards
The
Government of India posthumously conferred on him the Bharat Ratna in 1991 and
the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace Development and Disarmament Award in 1991.
