1992 : SATYAJIT RAY (1921 - 1992)







    Satyajit Ray was born on May.02.1921 at Calcutta 
    He was educated at Calcutta and Visva Bharathi Universities
    He worked as Junior Visualizer & Art Director at D J Keymer Advertising Calcutta (1943 – 1955)
    He achieved world fame  as Director, Producer, Story Writer, Editor, Music Composer of Bengal Cinema based at Calcutta (1955 – 1992)
    He died on April .23.1992 at Calcutta at the age of 70.  


Cinema
    He produced and directed 28 feature films, 1tele film and 6 documentaries in a span of four decades
    His famous works are the Apu’s trilogy - Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar and Calcutta trilogy - Pratidwandi , Seemabadda, Jana Aranya





    His films won awards at almost all major film festivals . He received an Oscar award for lifetime achievement. 
    He also served as National Research Professor of Cinema.
                            


Awards
    The Government of India honoured him with Padma Sri in 1958, Padma Bhushan in 1965, Padma Vibhushan in 1976, Bharat Ratna in 1992 . He is the first Indian to be conferred all the four civilian awards. 
    He was presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1959 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for theatre in 1986. 
    He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for in 1967
    He won the Best Director award at National Film Festivals held at Delhi, Cannes, Edinburgh, Venice, Berlin, and Moscow
    He also received the Oscar award for lifetime achievement in 1992.
  


    He received the Dadasaheb Phalke award, Shantaram award, Vidyasagar award and Dadabhai Naoroji award. 

Orders
    He received the National Orders from the Governments of France and Yugoslavia. 

Doctorates
    He received Honorary Doctorates from The Universities of Delhi (1973), London (1974), Oxford (1978), Visva Bharathi (1978), Burdwan (1980), Jadavpur (1980), Benares (1981), North Bengal (1981), Calcutta (1985), Rabindra Bharathi (1987) for his contribution to Indian Cinema  


Fellowships
    He received the Fellowship of British Film Institute. London

    He was Editor of  a children's magazine Sandesh and also authored a series Adventures of Feluda. 
    An accomplished artist he designed the posters, billboards and sets for his movies. He designed the original book cover for Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s  Discovery of India.  
    He designed the logo of Sahitya Academy, Rupa books. He created the Ray style calligraphy for Bengali script and four fonts for the English script Ray Roman, Ray Bizarre, Daphnis and Holiday Script,
    He designed the commemorative postage stamp issued on 100th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore in May 07,1961. The orange coloured postage stamp is the first Indian postage stamp to depict the autograph of the personality.
