1999 : RAVI SHANKAR (1920 - 2012)


       Ravi Shankar was born on April.07.1920. at Varanasi, India
       He learned to play the Sitar from Ustad Allaudin Khan of Maihar and gave his first performance in 1944
        A renowned Classical Indian Musical Instrumentalist of Sitar, he gave numerous performances all over India and the World over a span of seven decades
       He died on 2012 at San Diego, California at the age of 92.

       He was Member of Uday Shankar Dance Troupe (1930 – 1938), Ustad Allaudin Khan Troupe (1938 – 1944), Indian People Theatre (1944 – 1946) , Renaissance Theatre (1946 – 1948).
       He was Chief Producer of Vadya Vrinda for All India Radio at New Delhi (1948 – 1956).
       He founded and directed the Kinara School of Music at Bombay (1956 – 1967) and later at California (1967 – 2012). He popularized Indian Classical Music in the West in association with Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison
       He established the Ravi Shankar Foundation. California

Professorships
      He was the National Research Professor of Music, Government of India. He was Visiting Professor of Music at Universities of California, Los Angeles and San Diego and New York.

Memberships
        He was nominated Member of Rajya Sabha (1986 – 1992). He was Member of National Music   Council, National Dance Council and National Culture Council. Government of India
       He was elected as Honorary Life  Member of Academy of Arts Letters & Music of USA, UNESCO and India.

       He composed many music albums notable ones being East Meets West, East Greets West, Genesis, Passages, Tana Mana

        He composed music for films Pather Panchali, Gandhi ,Kabuliwala, Raga , Meera ,Anuradha, Aparajita , Apur Sansar , ,Neech Nagar, Charlie

Ballets & Games
        He composed ballets Chandalika, Navarasa Ranga and Swagatham
        He was the Chief Music Producer & Conductor for IX Asian Games at New Delhi (1982)

Concerts
         He performed in Music concerts at UN, USA and Canada. Festivals of India at UK.USSR

Awards
         The Government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 1967 , Padma Vibhushan in 1981 and Bharat Ratna in 1999
         He is the second musician to receive Bharat Ratna 
         He also received the Mahatma Gandhi award, Rajiv Gandhi award, Rabindranath Tagore award and Kalidas award
          He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Arts in 1992
          He received the music awards of Amity Award, Grammy Award, Crystal   Award, Imperial Award Guinness Award, Britain prize, Japan prize and German prize
          He also received Berlin Film Festival award Venice Film Festival award.

Orders
          He received the National Orders from the Governments of Asia , Britain and France.

Fellowships
          He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1962) and Fellowship (1975) , John D Rockefeller III Fellow.

Doctorates
          The Universities of Viswa Bharathi, Rabindra Bharathi ,Indira Kala , California, Melbourne, Harvard, New England, Victoria, Benares ,Delhi conferred Honorary Doctorates on him for his life time contribution to Instrumental Music.
