Dhondo Keshav
Karve was born on April 18 1858 at Ratnagiri , Maharashtra.
He was educated
at Elphinstone College in Bombay where he obtained his BA, MA.
He served as Professor of Mathematics, Ferguson
College, Pune (1891 – 1914).
He later founded and served as the Principal of
Srimathi Nathibai Damadordas Thackersay Women’s University, Bombay – the first university
for women in India (1914 – 1949).
He founded and
headed the Maharishi Karve Sree Shiskhan Samsthan Society at Pune (1949 – 1962).
He died on November 09 1962 at Pune, Maharashtra
at the age of 104.
Women education
and welfare
He founded
the Maharishi Karve Sree Shiskhan Samsthan at Pune which established the Anantha
Balika Ashram – Pune , Hindu Widow Home and School and Samata Sangh
A renowned social
reformer he dedicated his entire life time for women education and welfare especially
widow.
Awards
The Government
of India honoured him with Padma Vibhushan in 1955 and Bharat Ratna in 1958. He
is the oldest recipient of Bharat Ratna receiving it at the age of 100
Doctorates
He received honorary doctorates from the
Universities of Benares (1942) , Pune (1951) ,SNDT (1954) and Bombay (1957) for
his life time contribution to women’s welfare.
He was bestowed the title Maharishi -
the Great Sage
