1954 : SARVAEPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN (1888 - 1975)






   
      Sarvaepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September.05.1888 at Tirutani , Madras
      He obtained his BA from Voorhees College. Vellore, MA in Philosophy from Madras Christian College.
      He was Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Madras University (1909 – 1918). He was Professor of Philosophy at Mysore University (1918 – 1921) and Calcutta University (1921 – 1931)
      He was Vice Chancellor of Andhra University (1931 – 1936)
      He was Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions & Ethics at Oxford University (1936 – 1939)
       He was Sir Sayaji Rao Professor of Indian Culture and Civilizations & Vice Chancellor of Benares Hindu University (1939 – 1948)
      He was Chairman of Universities Education Commission (1948 – 1949)
      He was Indian Ambassador to USSR (1948 – 1952)
      He was elected Vice President (1952 – 1962) and President (1962 – 1967) of Republic of India
      He retired and settled in Madras from where he spoke and wrote on history, theology and philosophy (1967 – 1975)
      He died on April.17.1975 at Madras aged


Philosopher
      He taught, wrote and spoke on Indian , Western and Eastern theology and philosophy at Universities of Madras, Mysore, Calcutta, Andhra and Benares
       He visited and lectured at several Universities all over the world including Oxford, Manchester, London, Chicago, Princeton, Harvard and Yale.
       He was President of Indian Philosophical Congress. President of Sahitya Akademi and Vice President of Poets Essayists Novelists – PEN
       He was Chief Indian Delegate and Chairman of Executive Board of United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO .Paris


Vice President & President of India
       He was the first Vice President for two terms (1952 – 1962) and the second President of India(1962 – 1967) and held both posts with dignity 

Awards
       The Government of India conferred the Bharat Ratna on him in 1954 for meritorious service
He also received the Goethe Prize, Toynbee prize and Templeton prize


Orders
        He received the Order of Merit from United Kingdom and Germany


Doctorates
       The Universities of Teheran, Nepal, Andhra, Calcutta, Moscow, Oxford, Cambridge, Ireland, Rome and Pennsylvania


Fellowships 
       He was elected Fellow of All Souls College , British  Academy and Sahitya Academy

NATIONAL TEACHERS DAY
        National Teachers Day is observed every year on September 5th, the birth anniversary of Dr S.Radhakrishnan , distinguished academician, diplomat, statesman, philosopher, thinker, orator and Writer who  served as Vice President and President of India.
The Radhakrishnan award for best teachers selected from all over the country is presented on this day
