Amartya
Kumar Sen was born into the illustrious family of Bengali Sens on November 03,
1933, at Santiniketan, West Bengal. He was christened Amartya or Immortal by the
first Indian Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.
He
received his primary and secondary school education from St. Gregory School,
Dhaka and Patha Bhavana, Santiniketan.
He
graduated in BA Economics from the Presidency College, University of Calcutta in
1953. He subsequently obtained his BA, MA and PhD in Economics from Cambridge
University in 1955 and 1959 respectively.
He
served as Founder Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at Jadavpur
University (1955 – 1958).
He
completed his PhD in Economics in 1958 and served as Fellow at Trinity College,
Cambridge (1958 – 1963).
He
served successively as Professor of Economics at the Universities of Delhi
(1963 – 1971), London (1971 – 1977), Oxford (1977 – 1987) and Harvard (1987 –
1998).
He
served as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge (1998 – 2004), the first Asian
to head an Oxbridge College.
He
is presently the Thomas William Lamont Junior Professor of Economy and Philosophy
at Harvard University (2004 – 0000).
Economist
An
economist of international repute he specializes in growth, development and welfare
economics.
He
has devised econometric models for social cause, social justice, social
welfare, inequality, poverty, public health and welfare. He studied the
economic basis of famines and developed Human Development Index.
He
has been a teacher and researcher in economics at the leading Universities in
India, United Kingdom and United States since 1957, besides holding Visiting Professorships
at premier universities all over the world.
He
was President of Econometric Society, Indian Economic Association, American Economic
Association and International Economic Association. He was also President of
Development Studies Association and Human Development Capability
Association.
He
was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics 1998 for his contributions to welfare
economics.
Chancellor
He
served as Chief Mentor (2007 – 2012) and First Chancellor (2012 – 2015) of
Nalanda University.
President
He
was Honorary President and Advisor of Oxfam Charitable Trust.

He
is the Chairman of the Evo Colorni Trust, London established in memory of his deceased
wife.

is the Honorary director of Centre for Human and Economic development Studies
at Peking University.

is Advisor to United Nations and World Health Organization. He was Advisor to
Encyclopaedia Britannic.

He holds Visiting Professorship at
the Universities of Viswa Bharati, Delhi, Massachusetts, California, Harvard,

He
was elected as Fellow of British Academy, Irish Academy, American Academy of
Arts and Sciences, American Society of Political & Social Science, American
Society of Philosophy, and American Society of Economy.
He
is Fellow of Royal Society of Dublin, Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Senior Fellow
of Harvard Society of Fellows.
Honorary
Fellow of All Souls College, Darwin College, Edmund College, Nuffield College,
Trinity College, London School of Economics, London School of Oriental Studies,
London School of Tropical Health and Hygiene.
Titles
He
is revered as “the Conscience of the Profession" and "the Mother Teresa of Economics" for his work on
welfare economics.
Doctorates
He
has been conferred Honorary Doctorates by over 60 universities from all over
the world for his life time contribution to economics.
Awards
He
received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1998 for his contributions to
welfare economics.
The
Government of India conferred on him the Bharat Ratna in 1999.
The
United States awarded him the National Humanities Award in 2011, United Kingdom
the Order of Companion of Bath in 2000 and France the Legion of Honour in 2013.
