She was educated at Albania .She joined the Sisters of Loreto,
Ireland in 1928
She worked as Teacher in Geography (1928 – 1944) and
Principal (1944 – 1948) of St.Marys Girls High School, Calcutta
She was granted Indian citizenship in 1948 . She worked for
Catholic Relief Service Society, Calcutta (1948 – 1950).
She founded and headed as Superior General of Missionaries of
Charity at Calcutta (1950 – 1996) and served the poorest of the poor all over
the world for five decades
She died on September.05.1997 at Calcutta. India aged 87
She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October.19.2003 and
canonized by Pope Francis on September.04.2016 at Vatican
Social Worker
She founded Missionaries of Charity at Calcutta on October.07.1950
and established orphanages, old age homes and schools, soup kitchens. She also
founded dispensaries, mobile clinics and hospices for people with HIV,
Tuberculosis and Leprosy across the world.
Her organization has around 4500 sisters working in 594
communities in 133 countries
She founded Fathers of Charity, Sisters of Charity, Brothers
of Charity, Volunteers, Co Workers, Nirmal Kennedy Bhavan , Shishu Bhavan
She served as Member of National Integration Council and
Indian Red Cross Society
Titles
The Holy Catholic Church at Vatican ordained her as Sister
Teresa in 1928, Mother Teresa in 1937 and Saint Teresa in 2016.
Awards
The Government of India conferred the Padma Sri in 1962 and
Bharat Ratna in 1980.
She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1980
She was awarded the
Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for International Understanding, Indira Gandhi award for National Integration ,and Rajiv Gandhi National award
She also received Pope
John award, Pope Paul award, Good Samaritan award, Balzan award , Templeton award,
Ramon Magsaysay award, John F Kennedy award, Leo Tolstoy award and Albert
Schweitzer award
Medals
She received the UNFAO medal and UNESCO Medals from United
Nations. She received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985 and US
Congressional Gold Medal in 1997.
Orders
She received the National Orders from the Governments of
United Kingdom, Australia , Yemen , Albania and Haiti
Fellowships
She was conferred Honorary Fellowship of Royal College of
Physicians.UK
Doctorates
The Universities of Visva Bharathi , Jadavpur, Madras, Cambridge,
Harvard, San Diego , Catholic – Louvain and Scranton conferred Honorary doctorates on her for her
selfless service
