1997 : GULZARI LAL NANDA (1898 - 1998)



         G L Nanda was born on July 04 1898 at Sialkot, Punjab
         He was educated at Lahore, Amritsar, Agra and Allahabad and obtained his BA , MA and LLB
         He became Professor of Economics at National College, Bombay (1920 – 1922) .
         He joined labour welfare movement and he became the Secretary of Textile Labour Association (1922 – 1946) .He simultaneously got involved in the Indian independence movement and was imprisoned by the British Raj
          He served as Parliamentary Secretary and later as Minister of Labour & Housing, Bombay and Chairman of Bombay Housing Board (1946 – 1950)
          He was the first Deputy Chairman of National Planning Commission (1950 – 1951) , He joined the Central Government and served as Union Minister of Planning , Irrigation & Power (1951 – 1957) Planning , Labour & Employment (1957 – 1960), Planning (1960 – 1962), Labour & Employment (1962 – 1963) Home Affairs (1963 – 1966) and Railways (1970 – 1971)
          He retired from politics and served as Chairman of Kurukshetra Development Board (1971 – 1990) and devoted his rest of his life for social welfare activities
          He died on January 15 1998 at Ahmedabad , Gujarat at the age of 100.

Labour Welfare Activist
         He was the Secretary of Textile Labour Association, Hindustan Mazdoor Seva Sangh , President of Indian National Trade Union Congress . He was the leader of Indian delegation to International Labour Congress.

Social Welfare Activist
          He was President of Navajeevan  Sangh , Bharat Seva  Sangh , Bharat Sadhu Samaj  , Chairman of Citizen  Forum , People  Forum , Manav Dharma Mission and Trustee of Kasturba Gandhi Memorial Trust.

Union Minister
         He as the India’s first Union Minster of Planning and Deputy Chairman of National Planning Commission successfully formulated and implemented the First, Second and Third Five Year Plans.
         He as Union Minister of Home Affairs briefly officiated as Prime Minister of India twice following the sad demise of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964 and Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966.

Awards
         The Government of India honoured him with Padma Vibhushan in 1991 and Bharat Ratna in 1997.
         He also received Rajaji award , Netaji award and Gandhi award.
