1954 : CHANDRASEKHARA VENKATA RAMAN (1888 - 1972)

         C V Raman was born on November 07 1888 at Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu
         He completed his school education and obtained his BA and MA from Presidency College, University of Madras
         He initially served as Assistant Accountant General in Indian Finance Department  at Calcutta (1907 – 1917) , but relinquished the coveted and lucrative post to pursue his scientific interests 
         He was Sir.Taraknath Palit Professor of Physics at University of Calcutta (1917 – 1933) where he discovered the Raman Effect
         He subsequently moved to Bangalore where he served as Professor of Physics & Director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (1933 – 1948)
         He became the National Research Professor & Director, Raman Research Institute, Bangalore (1948 – 1970)
         He died on November 21 1970 at Bangalore, Karnataka

Physicist
         He discovered the Raman Effect on February 28, 1928 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
        Raman effect is change in the wavelength of light that occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules. 
        Raman Effect is observed when a beam of light traverses a dust-free, transparent sample of a chemical compound, a small fraction of the light emerges in directions other than that of the incident beam.

         He studied the physical properties of Optics, Acoustics, Crystals, Minerals, Diamonds ,Musical Instruments and published several research papers in peer reviewed International Science  Journals
         He established and headed scientific organizations like the Indian Association for Cultivation of Science, National Institute of Sciences, Indian Science Congress, Indian National Science Academies and edited the Indian Journal of Physics.

         He was elected as General President of the 16th session of Indian Science Congress held at Madras in 1929 and delivered the presidential address on Raman Effect.

                                                Awards
         He is the first Indian and Asian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The Government of India conferred the Bharat Ratna on him in 1954
         He was also awarded the Lenin Prize, Hughes medal, Franklin medal ,Mattuci medal

        He was elected as Fellow of Royal Society UK, besides the Academy of Sciences of India, USA ,UK , France and Vatican

       National Science day is observed every year on February 28 is to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect on February 28 1928 by Sir C V Raman.
