MV was born on September.15.1860 at Muddenahalli , Mysore
He studied at Wesleyan Mission High School, Bangalore and
later obtained his BA from Central College, Bangalore and BE from College of
Science& Engineering. Pune. He was awarded the James Berkeley Gold medal
for outstanding academic performance
He served as Assistant Engineer (1884 – 1896), Executive
Engineer (1896 – 1907) and Superintending Engineer (1907 – 1909) of Irrigation
and Public Works Department of Bombay Presidency
He later also served as Chief Engineer of Public Works of
Hyderabad (1909 – 1909) and Mysore (1909 – 1912)
He was Dewan of Mysore (1912 – 1919)
He was Advisor (1919 – 1927), Director of Tata Sons Bombay
(1927 – 1955) and served Founder President of All India Manufacturers Organization (1955 – 1962)
He died on April.14.1962 at Bangalore at the age of 101.
Engineer
A distinguished civil engineer he designed and constructed major
irrigation dams , flood protection systems, water supply , sanitation and drainage
systems in provinces of Bombay , Hyderabad , Mysore and Sind and Aden.
He is credited with the design and construction of the first
multipurpose hydro electric project of India, the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam &
Brindavan Gardens on the Kaveri River at Mandya in Mysore State in 1924.
Administrator - Dewan
of Mysore
He as the Dewan of Mysore established several educational, industrial,
technical and financial institutions and is regarded as the Father of Modern
Mysore State
He established the educational institutions Mysore University,
Agricultural College, Industrial College, Engineering College, Technical
College and Polytechnic
He established the industrial institutions Mysore Silks, Mysore
Sandal Oils, Mysore Soaps, Mysore Chemicals, Mysore Paints, Mysore Lamps,
Mysore Metals and Mysore Iron & Steel
He established the financial institutions State Bank of
Mysore and Mysore Chamber of Commerce.
Doctorates
He was conferred honorary doctorates by
the Universities of Calcutta (1921),Bombay
(1931),Benares (1937),Allahabad (1944),Mysore (1948),Andhra (1953) ,Jadavpur
(1958) and Patna.
Fellowships
He was President of the
1923 Session of Indian Science Congress . He was elected Fellow of
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Institute of Engineers of India and
Britain , Institute of Town Planners.
Awards
The Government of British
India conferred on him Kaiser i Hind medal in 1906, Companion of British Indian
Empire (CIE) in 1911 and Knight Commander of Indian Empire (KCIE) in 1915
The Government of India
conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1951 on his 100th birthday.

He has authored several publications on Industrial development,
Nation building and Planning.
