Maulana Abul Kalam
Azad was born on November.11.1888 at Mecca, Saudi Arabia
He received his formal education in Calcutta and graduated as poet and journalist.
He founded and edited the Urdu newspapers of Al Hilal (1912 – 1914) and Al Bagah (1914 – 1920)

He actively participated
in the Khilafat Movement and Indian Freedom Movement (1920 – 1947)
He served as the India’s first Union Minister
for Education (1947 – 1958).
He died on February.22.1958 at New Delhi at
the age of 69.
Independence Activist
He joined the
Indian Independence Movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and
actively participated in the Khilafat Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement,
Non Violence Movement, Salt Satyagraha and Quit India Movement. He was placed
under house arrest and imprisonment several times by the British Government.
He served as General Secretary and later as President of
Indian National Congress twice in (1923) and (1940 – 1946).
Union Minister for
Education
He served as
the India’s first and longest Union Minster for Education (1947 – 1958) . He formulated
the foundations of basic, primary, secondary, higher education, vocational, scientific
and technical education systems.
He advocated universal,
compulsory basic education for all children
He was instrumental in the establishment of
Universities Grants Commission, Indian Institutes of Technology.
He founded and headed the Indian Council for
Cultural Relations at New Delhi
Awards
The Government
of India posthumously conferred on him the Bharat Ratna in 1992
Publications
He was a renowned
scholar and wrote profusely on poetry, philosophy and theology in Urdu and English
languages under the pen name Azad.
His famous works are
India Wins Freedom (1958) which is about his political life , Sallies of Mind (1942)
which is about his social and spiritual life
