1963 : ZAKHIR HUSSAIN (1897 - 1969)





         
         Dr Zakhir Hussain was born February 08 1897 at Hyderabad
         He obtained his BA MA from MAO College Aligarh and PhD in Economics from University of Berlin
         He served as the youngest Vice Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia at Delhi (1926 – 1948) and later as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (1948 – 1956) his alma mater
         He was nominated Member of Rajya Sabha (1956 – 1957) and later served as the Governor of Bihar (1957 – 1962)
         He served as Vice President (1962 – 1967) and President (1967 – 1969) of Republic of India
         He died on May 03 1969 at Delhi while in office aged 72. 

Educationist
         A distinguished educationist who pioneered basic and adult education in India. 
        He served as third Vice Chancellor (1926 - 1948) and fourth Chancellor (1963 - 1969) of  Jamia Milia islamia.



        He was Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (1948 - 1956)   
        He was President of Hindustani Talimi Sangh at Sevagram


        He was President of World University Service , Chairman of Central Board of Secondary Education and Member of National Commissions on Universities, Press and Arts & Letters.

President of India
        He was elected as the Third President of India in 1967 and held the post with exemplary grace and dignity. He was the first Muslim to hold the office, the first to die while in office and also had the shortest tenure. 
Awards
        The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Vibhushan in 1954 and Bharat Ratna in 1963.
           
Doctorates
        He received Honorary doctorates from the Universities of Cairo, Delhi, Aligarh, Allahabad & Calcutta.
