Pursushottam Das
Tandon was born on August.01.1882 at Allahabad.
He obtained his BA,
MA in History and LLB in Law from Allahabad University.
He practised as an
Advocate at Allahabad High Court (1906 – 1921). He also served as Minister of
Law in Nabha State.
He gave up his
lucrative legal career and worked tirelessly for the welfare of peasants in the
United Provinces (1921 – 1937) and served as President of Kisan Sabha
He served as
Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly (1937 – 1950). He served as
President of Indian National Congress (1950 – 1952). He was elected as Member
of Parliament in Lok Sabha (1952 – 1956) and Rajya Sabha (1956 – 1962)
He died on
July.01.1962 at Allahabad.
Independence
Activist
He joined
Independence Movement and was initially associated with Lala Lajpat Rai of
Servants of the People Society. He later joined Mahatma Gandhi and actively
participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement, Non Cooperation Movement, Salt
Satyagraha and Quit India Movements for which he was imprisoned several times
by the British Raj (1921 – 1947)
Language Activist
He devoted his
life to achieve Official language of India. He favoured the impartment of education though
mother tongue of students. He was associated with Hindi Sahitya Sammelan and
Rastrabhasha Prachar Samiti. He founded the Allahabad Hindi Vidyapith.
Titles
He was given
the title Rajarishi or Royal Saint in Sanskrit by Mahatma Gandhi for his
unselfish nature
Awards
The Government
of India conferred the Bharat Ratna on him in 1961
