1998 : CHIDAMBARAM SUBRAMANIAM (1910 - 2000)

     


        CS was born on January.30.1910 at Pollachi . Coimbatore
    He obtained his BSc Physics from Presidency College and BL from Law College ,Madras University
       He practiced as an Advocate at the Madras High Court (1936 – 1946).He actively participated in the Independence movement under leadership of Gandhiji and Rajaji
       He was Member of Constituent Assembly (1946 – 1950) and Parliament (1950 – 1952).
     He served as Minister of Finance, Education & Law & Leader of the House in Madras State  (1952 – 1962)
       He served successively as Union Minister of Steel & Heavy Engineering (1962 – 1963), Mines & Industries (1963 – 1964) and Food & Agriculture (1964 – 1967)
       He was Chairman of National Aeronautics Commission (1967 – 1968) and National Agricultural Commission (1968 – 1971)
      He served successively as Union Minister of Planning & Vice Chairman of National Planning Commission. (1971 – 1972). Union Minister of Science & Technology (1972 – 1975), Finance (1975 – 1977), (1977 – 1979), Defence (1979 – 1980)
       He retired from active politics and became Vice President of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (1980 – 1990).
       He was Governor of Maharashtra (1990 – 1993).He served as Chancellor (1993 – 1994) and Chancellor Emeritus (1994 – 2000) of Avinashilingam Institute of Higher Education for Women – Deemed University .Coimbatore
       He died on November.07.2000 at Chennai at the age of 90.

Government Service
      He served the Union Government of India with distinction as Cabinet Minister in major portfolios of Food, Agriculture, Industries, Planning, Finance and Defence

Public Service
   He was Chairman of Avinashilingam Foundation, Loganathan Foundation, Ranganathan Foundation, National Agro Foundation and Sadachar Bharathi., Bharatidasan Institute of Management

Architect of Green Revolution in India
       He as Union Minster of Food & Agriculture drafted and implemented India’s modern agricultural development policy which led to the record production of wheat in 1972, termed the Green Revolution of India.
       He introduced high yielding varieties of hybrid seeds, subsidized pesticides and fertilizers which ushered an era of self sufficiency in food production in India. 






Awards
       The Government of India conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1998
      He also received the Anuvrat award, U Thant award , YB Chavan award and Norman Borlaug award

Doctorates
     He received Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Madras (1999) Manipal(1999) Jaffna(2000) and Madurai
