APJ Abdul Kalam was born on October
15 1931 at Rameshwaram , Tamil Nadu . He completed his school education at
Schwartz School , Ramnad and subsequently
obtained BSc Physics from St Joseph College , Trichirapalli and Diploma
in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology
He initially served as Senior
Scientific Assistant, Directorate of Technical Development &
Production ( Air ) , Ministry of Defence , Government of India (1958 – 1963)
He joined he Indian Space
Research Organization in 1963 and successively served as the Project
Engineer (1963 – 1968)

of Satellite
Launch Vehicles – SLV at ISRO ,Trivandrum
and Director, Aerospace Design & Dynamics (1980
– 1982) at ISRO,

He moved to DRDO where he served as Director,

Research and Development Laboratory,
Hyderabad (1982 – 1992) and Director General of Defence Research and Development
Organization & Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister (1992 – 1999)
He was Principal Scientific Advisor
to Government
of India (1999
– 2001)
He was Padma Sri Dr T Muthaiyan Professor
of Technology & Societal Transformation, Anna University, Chennai ,
(2001 – 2002)
He was elected the 11th
President
of Republic of
India and held office (2002 – 2007)
He was the Founder Chancellor of Indian
Institute of Space Science & Technology at Thiruvananthapuram ( 2007 – 2015
) . He held Visiting Professorships in several premier institutes and universities
A renowned scientist who developed
Indian space, missile and nuclear weapons programme . He was the eleventh President
of India
He died on July 27 2015 at the
age of 83 , while addressing the students of Indian institute of Management at
Shillong, Meghalaya
Scientist - Space Research
He
led the team which indigenously developed and launched the Satellite Launch Vehicle
- SLV 3 on July 18 1980 which in turn successfully deployed the satellite
Rohini in orbit . India became the sixth space nation in the world
Scientist - Defence Research
He
directed IGMDP – Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme at DRDO which successfully
designed and launched the missiles Agni, Dhanush , Prithvi,
Nag,
Trishul,
and is hence known as the Missile Man of India
Indigenous main battle tank - Arjun , aircraft – Hansa and
radar – Rajendra were also developed during his tenure
He also pioneered and patented Kalam Raju stent and Kalam Raju tablet and Kalam prosthesis

The Peaceful Nuclear Explosions

Bhushan in 1981 , Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna in 1997
He also received the Indira
Gandhi Award for National Integration. The notable awards are Jindal award, Modi award,
Birla award ,Firodia award , Aryabhatta award, Nayudamma award ,Chandra award ,Sankara
award , Ramanuja award , Savaarkar award and
Bharathiar award
The International awards conferred on
him are Hoover medal, Karman medal and Charles medal , Werner Von Braun award

He received honorary doctorates from over 40 universities from India and abroad for his contribution to science

achievements - the Peaceful Nuclear Explosions 1998 (Operation Shakthi -
Pokhran II ) at Pokhran , test flights of first indigenous aircraft of Hansa
3 and Trishul missile
Is a symbol of quest for scientific inquiry, technological creativity,
the translation of that quest in the integration of Science, Society and
Industry , to honour technological innovations and their successful commercialization
