Lal Bahadur Shastri
was born on October.02.1904 at Mughalsarai, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh
He was
educated at Kashi Vidya Peeth, Varanasi and granted the title Shastri .
He joined Independence
Movement and was initially associated with Lala Lajpat Rai of Servants of the People
Society. He later joined Mahatma Gandhi and actively participated in the Civil
Disobedience Movement, Non Cooperation Movement, Salt Satyagraha and Quit India
Movements for which he was imprisoned several times by the British Raj (1920 - 1947)
He was
appointed as Parliamentary Secretary (1946 - 1947) and later served as Minister for
Home, Police & Transport in Uttar Pradesh Government (1947 - 1952).
He served as
Union Minster for Transport and Railways (1952 - 1956), Communications & Transport (1957 - 1958) , Commerce & Industry (1958 - 1961), Home Affairs (1961 - 1963) and Without Portfolio (1963 - 1964).
He served as the
second Prime Minister of India (1964 - 1996)
He died of harness
on January.11.1966 at Tashkent, USSR shortly after the conclusion of the
Russian mediated India Pakistan peace agreement.
Prime Minister of India
An epitome of hard work, humility and honesty he succeeded
Jawaharlal Nehru as the second Prime Minister of India.
He coined the popular slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan ” (Hail the Soldier , Hail the Farmer ) at a public meeting on at Ram Lila Maidan in Delhi to appreciate the efforts of soldiers and farmers in the welfare of Indian Republic.
Defence – He successfully led the country against the Pakistan
aggression in 1965 which led to ceasefire
Agriculture – He conceived the Green Revolution and White Revolution
which led to self sufficiency in food and milk.
Awards
The Government of India conferred
on him the Bharat Ratna in 1966. He became the first person to be awarded posthumously.
