BC Roy was
born on July 01,1882 at Patna, Bihar.
He was educated at Patna Collegiate School , Patna College and
obtained his MBBS MD from Calcutta. He was granted the MRCP and MRCS from London.
He served
as Assistant Professor of Medicine, Campbell Medical College & Carmichael
Medical College Calcutta (1911 -1919) and Professor of Medicine, National
Medical College, Calcutta (1919 – 1942).
He served with distinction as the youngest Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University (1942 – 1944).

He actively

He was
elected successively to the Calcutta Corporation, Bengal Legislative Council
and Bengal Legislative Assembly.
He served as the first and second longest serving Chief Minister
of Bengal (1947 – 1962) and is considered the Founder of Modern West Bengal
He established educational institutions like Indian Institute
of Technology at Kharagpur and industrial organizations like Durgapur Steel
Plant.

Government of India honoured him Bharat Ratna in 1962.
