1961 : BIDHAN CHANDRA ROY (1882 - 1962)


July 01, 1982 - The 50 p commemorative  postage stamp issued on the birth centenary of BC Roy depicts  him as Chief Minister of West Bengal along with the Writers Building , Calcutta .The First Day Cover shows him as Professor of Medicine along with RG Kar Medical College, Calcutta. The cover with stamp is place cancelled at Calcutta  



           BC Roy was born on July 01,1882 at Patna, Bihar.
           He was educated at Patna Collegiate School , Patna College  and obtained his MBBS MD from Calcutta. He was granted the MRCP and MRCS from London.





           He served as Assistant Professor of Medicine, Campbell Medical College & Carmichael Medical College Calcutta (1911 -1919) and Professor of Medicine, National Medical College, Calcutta (1919 – 1942).
            He served with distinction as the youngest Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University (1942 – 1944).



December 31, 1957, Commemorative Postage Stamp issued on the Centenary of University of Calcutta. BC Roy served with distinction as its youngest Vice chancellor (1942 -1944)

          He actively participated in the Indian Independence Movement and served as  the first Chief Minister of West Bengal (1947 – 1962).
         A bachelor, He died on July 01,1962 at Calcutta while in office on his 80th birthday.

Medical Practitioner and Teacher
         Dr BC Roy excelled both in theory and practice of Allopathic Medicine.
         He lectured at the Medical Colleges of Calcutta and simultaneously treated patients from all walks of life including freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi  




         He founded and presided over the Indian Medical Council, Indian Medical Association .He established Hospitals for Infectious Diseases, Tuberculosis, Cancer, Mental Health and Women & Children.

Chief Minister of Bengal
        He was elected successively to the Calcutta Corporation, Bengal Legislative Council and Bengal Legislative Assembly. 
        He served as the first and second longest serving Chief Minister of Bengal (1947 – 1962) and is considered the Founder of Modern West Bengal



        He established educational institutions like Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur and industrial organizations like Durgapur Steel Plant. 

Awards
         The Government of India honoured him Bharat Ratna in 1962.

Doctorates
        He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Calcutta. 

Fellowships
        He was elected as Fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene , American College of Chest Physicians. 

NATIONAL DOCTORS DAY
        National Doctors Day is observed every year on July 01 , the birth anniversary and also coincidentally the death anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy . The BC Roy National Award instituted in 1976 is presented to Eminent Persons in the field of Medicine on this day.
