2001 : LATA DINANATH MANGESHKAR ( 1929 - )



Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929 at Indore in Madhya Pradesh.
She was initially trained in Hindustani Classical Music by her father Pandit Dinanath Mangheskar and later by Ustad Amanat Khan and Ustad Amanat Ali.


She initially performed as a Stage and Cine Artiste in Marathi at Pune (1942 – 1945) . She later settled permanently at Mumbai from where she performed as Playback Singer predominantly for Hindi and Marathi Cinema (1945 – 0000).  

Playback Singer
She recorded her first song in 1942 and has since then recorded over 30000  solos, duets and chorus songs  for over 2000 films in 20 Indian  languages, predominantly in Hindi and Marathi  languages over the last seven decades.
She was recognised by The Guinness Book of World Records for recording the most numbers of film songs (1974 – 1991).  
She also has composed music under the pseudonym Anand Ghan and produced 3 Hindi films and 1 Marathi film.
She sings in three octaves and has cut over 150 gold discs and 1 platinum disc. 
She is the Asthana Vidwan of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. She is the first Indian musician to perform in Royal Albert hall, London.

Philanthropist
She has performed several fundraising music concerts for wars , natural calamities, charitable and educational institutions.
She cofounded the Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation which runs hospitals and clinics for all sections of the society.

Commercials
She has a perfume named after her Lata Eau de Perfum and has designed fashion jewellery named Swaranjali.  

Awards
The Government of India conferred on her Padma Bhushan in 1969, Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and Bharat Ratna in 2001.
The Government of Maharashtra conferred on her Maharashtra Bhushan in 1997 and Maharashtra Ratna in 2001.  
She received the National Awards for Best Female Playback Singer in 1972, 1975, 1990 and Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1989.
She received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer several times, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 and Filmfare Special Achievement Award in 1993. 
She also received the Best Playback Singer awards from Maharashtra and West Bengal.
She received the NTR Award, ANR Award, Hakim Khan Award, Noor Jehan Award and Rajiv Gandhi Award.
The Lata Mangeshkar Awards for Best Musician has been instituted by the Governments of Madhya Pradesh in 1984 and Maharashtra in 1992.

Titles
She is affectionately addressed as the Melody Queen of Indian Cinema, Nightingale of India and Voice of The Millennium. 

Memberships
She was a nominated Member of Rajya Sabha (1999 – 2005).

Fellowships

Citizenships
She was conferred Honorary Citizenship by the United States and Suriname.

Doctorates
The Universities of Pune, Kolapur, Hyderabad, Khairagarh and New York conferred Honorary Doctorates for her services to music.
