Pandit
Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi was born on February 04 1922 at Gadag. Dharwad in Karnataka
He received
his training in Hindustani music from the renowned Guru Sawai Gandharva and gave his first public performance in 1941.
A renowned
Classical Indian Musical Vocalist of Hindustani music he gave numerous
classical and devotional performances all over India and the World over a span
of seven decades (1941 – 2011) was considered as the High Commissioner of
Classical Hindustani Music
He was
initially based at Dharwad and later at Mumbai
He died on
January 24 2011 at Pune at the age of 88.

Classical Devotional and Patriotic songs in Hindi, Marathi and Kannada on
stage, radio, television, films and gramophone discs
He organized
the annual Sawai Gandharva Music Festival at Pune every year from five decades
He was Artiste
at All India Radio Lucknow and Mumbai & Doordarshan.

Awards
The Government
of India honoured him with Padma Sri in 1972 ,Padma Bhushan in 1985 , Padma
Vibhushan in 1999, Bharat Ratna in 2008
He received the
National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in the film Ankhee in 1985
He also
received the Maharashtra Bhushan in 2002 and Karnataka Ratna in 2005
His other
awards are Tansen award , Haridas award
and Aditya Birla award and Life time achievement awards from the
Governments of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala and Delhi.
Doctorates
The Universities
at Gulbarga, Pune and Hampi conferred Honorary Doctorates for his life time
contribution to Hindustani Music.
Fellowships
He received the
Sangeet Natak Akademi award 1976 and fellowship in 1998.
