1992 : JEHANGIR RATANJI DADABHOY TATA (1904 - 1993)





      JRD Tata , Industrialist , Civil Aviation Pilot , Educationist and Philanthropist was born on July .29.1904 at Paris , France. He completed formal education at Paris and Bombay and served as Officer in The Sepoys of The French Army between 1924 to 1925 .

       He served successively as Assistant Director (1925-1926) , Director (1926-1938) , Chairman (1938- 1991 ) and Chairman Emeritus (1991-1993) of Tata & Sons Group of Companies at Bombay

      JRD Tata died on Nov.29.1993 at Geneva. Switzerland.


Industrialist

     JRD Tata headed for over five decades the Tata Group of Companies which included over 75 companies in diverse fields such as  Iron and Steel, Chemicals, Oil Mills , Electricals , Locomotives , Motors , Computers , Hotels , and Airlines etc.   






                                       






Civil Aviation Pilot

      JRD Tata became the First Indian Civilian Air Pilot on 01 February 1929 when the Federation  Aeronautiques Internationale British Empire granted him the License No.1
 

 
   



He piloted the First Air flight of Tata Airlines from Karachi to Bombay on October.15.1932 on a De Haviland Pussmoth aircraft .

       He headed the Tata Airlines from 1932 to 1946 and subsequently Air India from 1946 to 1978 . Under his leadership new aircrafts and new air routes were introduced which earned him the title - Father of Indian Civil Aviation. 
 





       The Indian Air Force made him Honorary Group Captain in 1948 , Honorary Air Commodore in 1966 and Honorary Air Vice Marshall in 1974.

Educationist

       JRD Tata presided over the Governing Councils of Indian Institute of Science .Bangalore, Tata Institute of Social Science, Tata Memorial Centre & Hospital , Tata Institute of Energy Science ,Tata Institute of Fundamental Research ,National Centre for Performing Arts , Bombay & National Institute of Advanced Studies. Bangalore.





        He was the Chancellor of University of Hyderabad from 1991 to 1993.

Philanthropist

        JRD Tata chaired the JRD Tata Trust , Sir Jamsedji Tata Memorial Trust , Sir Dorabhji Tata Memorial Trust, JN Tata Endowment , Homi Bhaba Fellowships Council , Bharat Yuva Sakthi trust

         He presided the Auroville Foundation and National Family Planning Foundation

         He was a member of Mahatma   Gandhi Memorial Trust , Kasturbha  Gandhi Memorial Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund

          He was a member of Atomic Energy Commission , National Population Council and National Integration Council.



Honours and Awards

          The Government of India bestowed the Padma Vibhushan in 1958 and Bharat Ratna in 1992. He is the first and only industrialist to be honoured with the Bharat Ratna
         The United Nations honoured him with the UN award for Civil Aviation in 1986 and Population in  1992        

         The Government of France in 1954 & 1983, Vatican in 1964 and West Germany in 1978 honoured him with their National Orders

         He is a recipient of Dadabhai Naoroji award , Jannus award ,Warner award ,Bessemer award and David Guggenheim award 

        He received Honorary Doctorates form the Universities of Allahabad (1947), Benares (1980),Bombay (1981) and Roorkee.
