1999 : GOPINATH BORDOLOI (1890 - 1950)


Gopinath Bordoloi was born on June 06, 1890 at Roha in Assam.
He studied at Cotton School and College at Gauhati and passed his matriculate examination in 1907 and intermediate examination in 1909. He obtained his BA in 1912 from Scottish Church College, Calcutta. He obtained his MA in 1914 and LLB Law in 1917 from University of Calcutta.
He worked as Headmaster of Sonaram High School, Gauhati (1914 – 1917).He practiced as an Advocate at Gauhati (1917 – 1922). He however gave up his lucrative legal practice to join the Indian Independence Movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. He as Secretary of the Indian National Congress organized freedom activities in Assam for which he was imprisoned by the British Raj (1922 – 1932).
He was Member of Gauhati Municipal Board and Local Board (1933 – 1936). Leader of Opposition (1936 – 1938) and Prime Minister of Assam (1938 – 1939).  He resigned from the government and participated in the Satyagraha movement (1939 – 1946)
He served as the first Chief Minister of Assam (1946 – 1950)
He died on August 05, 1950 in Gauhati at the age of 60 years.

Chief Minister of Assam
He served as the Chief Minister of Assam twice in (1938 – 1939) and (1946 – 1950) during which he worked the preservation of democracy, sovereignty and communal harmony in the state. He introduced land and tax reforms for the benefit of the peasants and workers. 
He was instrumental in the establishment of Gauhati High Court, Gauhati University, Assam Medical College, Assam Agricultural College, Assam Veterinary College and Kamrup Academy.

Titles
He was conferred the title “Lokapriya” or loved by all and “Sher-e-Assam” or the Lion of Assam. 

Awards
The Government of India posthumously honoured him with Bharat Ratna in 1999 thus making him the first and the only recipient of the award from North East.
