2019 : NANAJI DESHMUKH


        Chandikadas Amritrao Deshmukh or Nanaji Deshmukh was born on October 11, 1916 at Kadoli, Maharashtra.
        He studied at Sikar High School and Birla College, Pilani. 
        He served as Volunteer / Organizer / General Secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (1940 – 1951), Bharatiya Jana Sangh (1951 – 1977), Janata Party (1977 – 1980) and Bharatiya Janata Party (1980).
        He retired from politics and served as Chairman of Deendayal Upadhyaya Research Institute (1980 – 1991).
        He was Founder Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya   (1991 – 2010), the first rural university in India.  
        He died on February 27, 2010 at Chitrakoot. 

Political activist
        He was inspired by Keshav Balram Hegdewar and joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1940. 
        He started the Saraswati Shishu Mandir at Gorakhpur in 1950. 
        He was Managing Director of RSS Publications Panchajanya and Rastradhrama and Swadesh. 
        He worked with Madav Sadashiv Golwalkar , Deendayal Upadhyaya and Atal Behari Vajpayee and expanded the organization at Uttar Pradesh. He was instrumental in the formation of the first Non Congress Government in UP.  
          He actively participated in Bhoodan Movement (Gift of Land), Gramdan (Gift of Villages) and Sampoonra Karnti Movement (Total Revolution). 
        He served as Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha (1977 – 1979) and Rajya Sabha (1999 – 2005).

Social activist
        He retired from Politics in 1980 and embraced the philosophy of integral humanism and devoted for social restructure and rural self-reliance.
        He helped to improve the standards of agriculture, cottage industries, healthcare and education in 500 villages in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. 

Honours
        The Government of India conferred him with Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2019 for his public service. 
        He received the Dyanseswar Award in 2005.  

Doctorates
        He was conferred Honorary Doctorates by the Universities of Pune, Kanpur and MSU Baroda for contribution to public service. 
The Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Sciences University established in 2009 at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh is named in his honour.
